JVC Everio & Windows Movie Maker?

I have a JVC Everio camcorder and somehow it didn't come with a Cyberlink software, so I want to edit the videos on WMM. I changed the extension of the file to .mpg successfully but my WMM still won't accept it. It says "The file C:\Documents and Settings\Gu Carolyn\Desktop\DSCN3131.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

How can I solve this problem other than buying the cyberlink software?

save your video to your computer and go to mediaconverter.org   thats what i use..and mark the bubble thing that says convert directly from computer(i think its the 3rd one) and and click next

convert it to WMV and hit next hit next again and ur done

its free and easy but some ppl "dont recommend" that but i dont see why it works fine for me..
