JVC HDD Video camera editing?

Help,

I am struggling to edit the copied (drag & drop) video on my compute. I think they are in mpeg format and I have Adobe & Roxie video editing software but it says it does not reconize the files. Do I have to convert them and if so how? Hope someone can help me as it's driving me and more so my wife crazy. Thanks.
