JVC TV in for repair, have been told inverter is the problem.?

What is an inverter? and will this be expensive.....

the inverter supplies high voltage to the backlight on an lcd tv. It could be expensive depending on how greedy the repair shop is, in reality these cost peanuts, but if you dont know about electronics I dont advise you trying to replace this board yourself.
