JVC digital video camera... with windows movie maker...?

ok so i use a USB cable to connect my camera to the computer but it doesn't detect it...so i went into windows movie maker to try and get it but it still can't find the camera do I have to buy a DV cable or something? the main question is why can't it be detected by my computer?
