Question:

JVC surround sound system repair question.?

I have a fairly new JVC surround sound system that is on the fritz. The head unit will work fine, the problem is in the sub-woofer/amp. When I turn the system on, the amp/sub turns on for a second or so and turns off. I checked all the fuses and such, but all looks fine. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix it other than shipping it off for service? The amp weighs a ton, so shipping and repair would cost as much as a new system. Thanks!

  1. Disconnect the left and right channel cables and see if the same thing happens. If it still shuts off with nothing connected to it, then the trouble lies inside the sub.

If you are comfortable with a volt/ohm meter, you can purchase a service manual from JVC for the amplifier inside the subwoofer and possibly troubleshoot it yourself. It's a pretty simple circuit so the manual should be cheap. Check first for a shorted output device since they are always under a lot of strain in a subwoofer.

If you don't already have a meter, and choose to go buy one, it's helpful if it can test for diode effect.

Another route would be to check with a local repair shop. They will charge you, but it might be cheaper than paying the shipping.

    Best of luck!
