JaMarcus Russell works out with Washington Redskins
Former Oakland Raiders quarterback, and first overall draft pick, JaMarcus Russell worked out with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday according to Fredricksburg's
The Free Lance-Star.
The word is the Redskins are working out other players at quarterback besides Russell, according to a league source.
Washington's starting quarterback, Donovan McNabb was benched late in the game during the Redskins 37-25 loss to the Detroit Lions last Sunday 31 October. His replacement, Rex Grossman, was asked to run the two-minute drill and help the Redskins make a late
game comeback, but he fumbled the ball on his first snap, which the Lions ran back for a touchdown.
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan initially told the media that his own feeling was that Grossman had a better understanding of the situational requirements of running the two-minute offence than McNabb did, but has now alluded to McNabb not being fit enough
to start at quarterback for the team.
"The cardiovascular endurance that it takes to run a two-minute going all the way down with no timeouts, calling plays, it's just not easy," Shanahan said. "If I thought it was the best situation to do it, then Donovan would have run the two-minute offence."
There has been talk about McNabb downplaying a hamstring injury, but Shanahan's decision to bench McNabb late in the game has many people scratching their heads and wondering if maybe there is something deeper going on.
Russell, who was released by the Raiders in May, had been arrested on July 5 for possession of codeine syrup without a valid prescription. Last week a grand jury declined to indict him on the charges.
Russell, who played three seasons with the Raiders, told Houston's Fox 26 Sports that he was expecting to get another shot at the NFL. "I know for a fact," said Russell. "I have faith in God and strong beliefs. I know for a fact. It's going to happen. I
can't say when, but until it happens I am going to stay here in Houston and continue to work out each and every day no matter how long it takes."
