JaMychal Green leads as Alabama Crimson Tide beat Virginia Commonwealth Rams 72-64 – NCAA Basketball
JaMychal Green recorded a double-double with a game-high 21 points, including 16 of them in the second half, and 14 rebounds as Alabama Crimson Tide cruised past Virginia Commonwealth Rams 72-64 on November 27, 2011 at the Coleman
Coliseum, Tuscaloosa. With this victory, Alabama moved to a 7-0 record for the first time since 2006-07.
Green, who missed the previous game with a hip bruise, spent a few minutes in the locker room with a left elbow injury in the first half. However, he returned to the floor with a huge responsibility on his shoulders and ended on
an 8 for 12 from the field and 5 for 7 from free throw line. Tony Mitchell did not seem bothered at all by the a sprained right ankle that limited him to 8 minutes in the previous game and contributed 13 points, including six of the Tide's first 10 points
of the game. Mitchell also dished out three assists and blocked two shots in the victory.
Bradford Burgess led Virginia with 18 points, hitting three shots from downtown in the second half, and grabbed three rebounds in the loss. Rob Brandenburg and Juvonte Reddic added 10 points each for the Commonwealth Rams. Reddic
also pulled down five rebounds and ended on 5 for 8 shooting from the floor.
Crimson Tide shot 26 for 50 (52 percent) from the field and limited the Commonwealth Rams to 22 for 55 (40 percent).
JaMychal Green got Alabama going with a lay-up but Juvonte Reddic dunked to knot the score at 2 early in the first half. A Rams free throw later, Mitchell made a three-point jumper for a 5-3 lead.
Both teams played with good pace in the ensuing g passage and tied the game at 15 with 11:29 to go in the opening half. Crimson Tide however slowly opened up and carved out a 30-25 lead, before Virginia slammed the door with an
8-0 run to go ahead by 33-30 with 12 seconds to go in the first stanza.
Trevor Lacey hit a pair of free throws at the end of the half to cut the deficit to one, 33-32, at halftime.
Green scored eight of his points early in the second half, including six on dunks, as Alabama held a 42-40 lead within the first four minutes. Bradford Burgess stepped outside and knocked down two shots from downtown in next couple
of minutes to make it 50-44 for Virginia, before Alabama roared back and squared the game at 60.
Crimson however turned the tide for good at this point and erupted with six consecutive points for a 66-60 advantage. Rob Brandenburg nailed a pair of free throws to cut the margin to four but Mitchell ran away with the game by
hitting 3 of 3 from the line.
