JaVA School Volley Tournament in Jamaica concludes – Volleyball news
The Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA) organised a volleyball tournament for school children in Kingston this past weekend.
The tournament received teams from twelve schools and set up an excellent field of play for the participants.
The team of Unity Primary School proved to be the best and clawed its way to the top position. They downed Irwin Primary in the final showdown of the tournament and secured the national title. At the end of competition, teams settled down in following order:
Unity Irwin Greater Portmore Little London Anchovy Port Morant Savana-la-mar Lyssons Holly Hill Crescent Steer Town St Anns Bay
Kaldane Channer of Unity Primary staged an incredible show of volleyball on the final day and claimed the President's Madd Skills award.
On the other hand, Jahaina “Ras” Rose of Irwin Primary settled for the award of Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was on the runner-up side but still managed to receive the honour on account of his wonderful performance throughout the tournament.
He displayed good leadership skills and immensely contributed to the overall success of his team. The trophies and other accolades were awarded to the top three teams of the tournament, while the rest of the teams of the competition received volleyballs
from the NORCECA Volleyball Federation.
The final match between Unity Primary and Irwin Primary spanned over two sets, where the former launched power on latter. The players of Unity displayed good effort and went up on the scoreboard with the help of successful attacks and unstoppable aces. They
claimed opening set with a margin of five points (15-10). The Irwin side failed to bring any change in the second set and dropped the frame with identical score (10-15). The Unity finished the match 2-0 and celebrated victory.
The president of the Jamaica Volleyball Association Warrenton Dixon addressed the participating student athletes. He made an inspirational speech and urged the school children to become the future stars of volleyball and assured the support of JaVA in this
regard.
He stated, “This is not farfetched. It is being done by other countries. You are no worse than they are; you just lack opportunity. JaVA will do what we can to prepare you until we can get some substantial funding support to do more. Jamaica will be a major
force in volleyball.”
“After seeing that competition I was convinced that if one little-known man could organize such a competition nothing should stop a National Association from improving on the effort,” Dixon further added.
Dixon gave all the credit to coach Haile Mikael for generating idea of volleyball tournament for school teams. He also mentioned that Mikael organised the similar competition back in 2009, which was huge success.
