JaVale McGee receives 5 year contract offer from the Denver Nuggets – NBA News
JaVale McGee has received a five year contract offer for a whooping $50 million from the Denver Nuggets, it has been reported.
McGee was traded to the Denver Nuggets from the Washington Wizards last season, and played 20 games for them. He is an underrated centre who proved his worth and talent with the Nuggets this past season, and the Nuggets seem to
be convinced by his abilities enough to offer him a five year contract.
Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post reports:
“The Nuggets continue to pursue restricted free-agent centre JaVale McGee, who has a five-year, $50 million offer on the table, a source said. But McGee's representatives don't appear to be in a hurry to get a deal done and will
continue to negotiate. The Nuggets can match any offer another NBA team would make to McGee, 24.”
McGee played the first four seasons of his NBA career with the Washington Wizards, and averaged 11.9 points and 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game while playing 27.4 minutes per game in the 2011-2012 season.
After 40 games with the Wizards, McGee was traded to the Nuggets. Unaffected by the trade, McGee continued to put numbers up even with the Nuggets, averaging 10.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 20.6 minutes of playing time
per game. He was particularly effective against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round playoff series, which the Nuggets lost in 7 games.
Nuggets Head Coach George Karl is a believer in McGee, and wants to retain him for the next few seasons as the Nuggets attempt to improve on an impressive 2011-2012 season where they finished 6th in the Western Conference.
McGee is not yet an All Star level centre but has the height and ability to become one. He is being considered a top priority for the Nuggets as they look to return next season with the same roster from last season.
Although $50 million for McGee might look a bit steep, but the lack of quality big men in the NBA justifies his massive contract offer. At present McGee has only the Nuggets offer on the table but he is looking to let all his options
play out before he makes a final decision. The Nuggets have the right to match any offer McGee receives.
