Jack Bauer wins second stage as Henao Montoya retains overall lead in Tour of Utah
Endura Racing team’s Jack Bauer took a second stage of Tour of Utah 2011 on Thursday, August 11. Sergio Luis Henao Montoya maintained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Lehi and ended in Provo. The 26-year-old professional road racing cyclists showed a tremendous effort in the final 500 meters and opened huge gap to take a lead. The two cyclists Elia Viviani (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Jacob Keough (United
Healthcare) tried to catch him but failed.
Bauer said, “We had Scott Thwaites as our designated sprinter and we tried to set him up but in the final, myself and Alex Wetterhall opened a big gap off the front and I went with a kilometre to go. The wind was right, I took the corner fast, and had a
clean run to the end."
Yesterday’s most aggressive cyclist Jay Thomson (Bissell) launched the first attack and quickly reeled in the leaders. The group including Jeremy Vennell (Bissell), Luis Crosby (PureBlack) and Will Dugan (Type 1-Sanofi) also tried to get clear and make a
break.
The group of seven cyclists including Philip Deignan, Danny Pate, Dugan, Francois Parisien, Javier Acevedo and Roman Van Uden made the right move and gained a lead of 3 minutes and 20 seconds.
The composition of the race served to purpose, but Van Uden choose the first intermediate sprint instead of gain a important points and Colombian was also able to sit the Jamis-Sutter and United Healthcare team to control the situation of the bunch sprint.
After the first sprint points the gap was down to 1 minute and 30 seconds to line. Still 85 kilometres remaining, Francisco Mancebo increased his pace and shutting down the breakaway. The group of four cyclists Sevilla, Albert Torres, Rob Britton and Timothy
Gudsell launched an attack.
Anderson took maximum points and won the second sprint of the stage but his lead slowly began to fall. Tejay Van Garderen launched a solo attack to take a victory but failed and got caught in the final kilometres.
Jack Bauer increased his pace and took a lead ahead of the other cyclists. He took a total of 3 hours, 33 minutes and 43 seconds to cover the distance of 159.6 kilometres.
Henao Montoya took the overall standing with the timing of 8 hours, 17 minutes and 11 seconds while Sevilla Ribera was a runner-up with 7 seconds down to the Colombian.
Henao told the media, "I'm very happy to stay in the yellow jersey, because I feel like the team has worked hard for me and I feel the responsibility to carry the yellow jersey."
Levi Leipheimer (Radioshack) finished third with the difference of 13 seconds ahead of Anthony.
The third stage will start in Miller Motorsports Park (ITT) and all the cyclists will cover the distance of 14.5 kilometres.
