Jack Brabham says Webber’s title chances are over now
The former Australian driver Jack Brabham reckons that the Red Bull racer, Mark Webber has lost his chance of becoming the first Australian Formula One world champion since 1980. Brabham looks at the last round of the season, the Korean Grand Prix saying
that it was the worst weekend that the Australian could have embraced at this part of the season.
Sir John Arthur Brabham is one of the most famous Australian drivers and had been able to win three drivers' titles in 1959, 1960 and in 1966 with his personal team Brabham. He has also raced with other teams like Cooper, Lotus and Maserati.
Now, the 84-year-old admitted that he had been a big fan of Webber since always and especially since the start of the 2010 season, he has supported the driver immensely. Yet, he believes that unlike the past months, time does not seem to favour Webber much.
On the other hand, he believes that the other top drivers of the season, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel are on better terms with luck now.
Webber now stands a place behind Alonso with 220 points while Vettel follows him with 206.
Brabham says that he has a natural pull towards Webber for being his country man yet the current situation does not smell very good to him. This year has seen an Australian driver rule over the charts after a very long time, which gave a hope to the Australian
race fans to finally see a home champion. The last time an Australian was able to win a title was in 1980 when Alan Jones was successful in grabbing a World Title.
"It would mean a lot to me and it would mean a lot to Australia, but unfortunately I think his real opportunity has been blown last weekend. I'm really there behind him in the hope that he gets there but if he doesn't do it this year, I don't think he ever
will."
Webber has done very well all through the season but only the last race in Korea blew off his chances. This year had been so intense and stressful that many good drivers have been seen making poor mistakes on the tracks every now and then. However, this
Red Bull driver’s mistake might cost him his championship hope, which might not come to him again now.
"People like Alonso are young and Mark's getting a bit too old really now. He can probably go one more year but every year that goes by now he's getting older and this is a young man's sport. He's racing against 21-year-olds or 22-year-olds and he's got
the job in front of him."
