Jack Burnham captures two gold medals in Men’s 5km and 10km open water swim - 2011 Arafura Games
Jack Burnham of Queensland took home two gold medals in the Men’s 5km and 10km open water swim at Lake Bennett on Friday, May 13.
The race started in stunning fashion as the Queensland swimmer was leading from the front. On the other side, Michal Skrodzki of Poland and Hayden Vickers of Cook Islands were also cruising along the waves at Lake Bennett today.
However, it was Burnham who clinched both titles due to his remarkable, competitive and versatile performances in both the 5km and 10km open water swim events this morning.
Meanwhile, Michal Skrodzik took the silver medal and Hayden Vickers captured the bronze in the 5km. He also managed to claim the silver title in the Men’s 10km.
The Queenslander was immensely pleased and satisfied with his performances in the 5km and 10km open water swim events at Lake Bennett.
On the other hand, Sarah Rouan-sim of New Caledonia took home the golden crown in the Women’s 5km and 10km open water swimming events.
“I’m very happy. The water and the temperature were good and there was no wind – good conditions,” said Sarah.
Lara Whitehouse of NT snagged the silver title and Caitlyn James of WA grabbed the bronze medal in the corresponding meet.
When it came to the Women’s 10km final, it was taken over by Caitlyn James of WA with her natural speed and stamina. Meanwhile, Mariom Tormento of New Caledonia rounded out the top two in the corresponding event.
After the completion of the 10km meet, Caitlyn was happy as she managed to put on a brilliant show with her competitive performance in this meet.
In the meantime, the Arafura swimmers are keeping their eye on the 2012 London Olympics.
The APC General Manager, Sport Michael Hartung stated, “We are seeing quality athletes across both athletics and swimming and some of these athletes have put forward some very encouraging results at National and World Championships. We are very excited to
see what they can do come London.”
On the other side, five time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe has decided to test himself in the 200m freestyle for the London Olympic Games in 2012.
It is expected that Thorpe and Michael Phelps might vie in the Men’s 200m freestyle meet in London Olympics next year and that it will be an exciting treat to watch.
Astoundingly, the 14-time Olympic champion Phelps has just lost the Men’s 200m freestyle final meet at Charlotte UltraSwim in Charlotte, North Carolina today.
After the most shocking performance, his coach Bob Bowman said that their ultimate focus is on the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai right now.
