Jack Cust sparks as Seattle Mariners edge past Minnesota Twins, 8-7 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ designated hitter, Jack Cust was impressive with his bat as he went 2-for-5 and hit two RBIs with one homer in the Mariners’ 8-7 win against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on May 23.
Cust dominated over the pitchers after a long period. He expressed his feelings as, “It felt good to pick up the pitching. They've picked us up a bunch this year. If we can get our bats going we should be better.”
Both teams started pretty well and added runs on the score-board. Cust initiated with a one-run homer (397 feet) to centre-field and Ichiro Suzuki singled off left-field in the first inning. For the Twins, Denard Span hit a solo homer (394 feet) towards
right-field. The Mariners went ahead 2-1 at the end of first inning.
The Mariners scored their runs with continuous intervals as the batters put one run in the second inning when Chris Gimenez doubled to deep right and Jack Wilson scored a single run. The Mariners were on top 3-1 at the end of the second inning. Carlos Peguero
was ground out to second base but Cust completed a single run to extend the lead 4-1 and Franklin Gutierrez occupied third base during the third inning.
The game was tied 4-4 in the fourth inning when the Twins’ batters contributed three runs. Jim Thome homered (437 feet) off right-field while Michael Cuddyer and Delmon Young both scored two runs to end the three-run campaign. The Twins took a 5-4 lead in
the very next inning when Young singled to left-field position and Cuddyer posted a single run.
The sixth inning passed without a score for both sides as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect areas. The Twins extended their lead 7-4 by adding two runs in the seventh inning when Thome hit a homer (353 feet) to left-field and Cuddyer posted a single
run. On the other side, the Mariners scored two runs to cut the deficit 7-6 during the eighth inning. Brendan Ryan and Wilson both singled off right-centre field.
The Mariners’ Manager Eric Wedge was satisfied with the performance of his team but he pointed out some weaknesses. Wedge said, “There were so many moments in that game which were turning points. Ultimately, there were three or four things that if we don't
do what we need to do, we're not playing any more.”
In the ninth inning, the game was levelled again 7-7 when Michael Saunders took a single run on the drive of Peguero towards right-field. The Mariners ended the game 8-7 in the additional 10th inning when Wilson scored a run on the sacrifice bunt
of Luis Rodriguez to centre-field.
