Jack Lisowski beats Kuldesh Johal to set up Steve Davis clash – 2011 World Snooker Championship
The 19-year-old, Jack Lisowski, has set up a clash with one of the snooker greats Steve Davis after beating Kuldesh Johal by a frame score of 10-7 in the qualifying round 2 of the 2011 World Snooker Championship at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
Jack Lisowski, who fought with cancer successfully in 2009, is renowned for playing well in big matches. He beat Mark Selby at the end of his first year of professional tour and pushed John Higgins to the limits in their last clash a month back in the Welsh
Open.
The overall score line between the players was 64-54, 69-50, 70-28, 8-74, 58-67, 5-99, 79-0, 14-80, 51-59, 90-25, 69-55, 60-18, 19-75, 1-0, 82-5, 14-63, and 71-1.
Jack Lisowski took a flying start as he stormed into a 3-0 lead enjoying breaks of 53, 50, and 41 before Johal responded with one to reduce the deficit by 3-1 before the interval.
After the interval, Johal took the scrappy first one followed by the second with a couple of quick fires, 52 and 47. However, he was not able to pot any balls in the seventh frame as Lisowski produced a classy break of 79 to lead again by 4-3.
However, Johal did not have any reeling effects. He also showed his break building skills and made a magnificent break of 80 in eighth. He also took the ninth after a bout of safety to lead by 5-4 at the end of first session.
Starting the evening session with a deficit of 5-4, Lisowski rapidly increased his lead. He was almost invincible in the first three. The teenager made superb breaks of 89, 48, and 41 respectively to lead by 7-5. Johal clawed back with a break of 57 to take
the thirteenth but he again lost the next two in a row. Lisowski left his opponent three down with possible four to play.
Johal, who was trailing by 9-6, managed in winning the sixteenth frame with quick breaks of 21 and 32. He played a good tactical game under pressure and showed as if he believed he could pull the victory from there but his hopes were ended in the next frame
as Lisowski finished the matters off with a carving break of 71 and sealed his victory by 10-7.
Jack Lisowski will now face the six-time world champion, Steve Davis, in the round 3. This match is going to bring some crowd with it as people would want to see a legend battling out to reach the home of snooker.
