I'm a 6'0 player, who's just picking up golf. I can hit the ball fairly far for a beginner, so my dad says. I was wondering if the Jack Nicklaus set is a good by for $250 for a beginner to intermediate player?

  1. No matter what brand name the clubs are, the most important thing is to get the set fit for you.

Things like lie angle, shaft length, clubhead offset, and shaft flex are individual measurements that must be taken in order to get a set suited for your height and swing type.

You could go out and buy a set off the rack, but you'd be learning to swing the club, rather than learning to groove your swing. In other words, you'd be making adjustments to compensate for club specifications that don't meet your needs.

For $250 you can get plenty of good sets that are used. You can always change the characteristics of any golf club after you get fitted for it. Check out your local golf store to ask about the price of fittings. They usually run about $40, but it's worth it.

  2. There's more to a set of golf clubs than the signature name on the clubs.  You could spend that $250 and have the totally wrong fitting clubs for you.  With all the technology today and that at most golf clubs/courses, they have the professional golf personnel and club fitting centers to practically custom fit you to the right club choice.New golf clubs can be very expensive today, but as a beginner you can still find golf clubs at reasonable prices.  Some golf courses even have a good choice of used golf sets that they have taken in on trade.  So, before I would invest that $250 on a set of clubs I'm not sure would be the right clubs, I would see a golf pro at your golf course.
