Jack Nicklaus recalls the glorious shots of his past at a Luncheon ahead of the Memorial Tournament
The “Golden Bear” of the sport, Jack Nicklaus appeared at the charity luncheon at the Memorial Tournament as the chief guest and reminisced about some of the glorious shots from his past.
World record holder for the most major title victories in the sport to-date, Nicklaus is still one of the most revered and highly respected golfing personalities in the world, despite being 72 years of age.
Nicklaus, in his usual humorous mood, recalled the shots from his past that played an elementary role in his title victories in several major, although he joked that he cannot recall what happened yesterday.
He said, “I can still feel it, it feels the same. You can still feel the shot, the way it came off your hands, 30 or 40 years later. I still have that same feeling. I haven't matched it lately. I do know that feeling, though. And it's kind of fun to know what it feels like in golf”.
Nicklaus especially recalled the 1 iron he used to land the 1972 US Open and the 5 iron he used to win the Masters in 1986.
Nicklaus came close to landing the unprecedented Grand Slam of Golf several times in his career but was never able to achieve it.
He also remembered the 1 iron shots in particular, which helped him so often in manoeuvring his way out of difficult situations.
He overpowered the rampaging Bruce Crampton at pebble Beach to land the title and yet another in 1975 Masters where he held off Tom Weiskopf and Johnny Miller to win the title.
Also present at the luncheon, were the defending champion Steve Stricker and two-time U.S. Open champion and golf analyst, Andy North.
North said, “When I think of Jack Nicklaus, I think of (those), and 100,000 8-footers he made when he needed to make them”.
The charity bid has helped raise huge sums for the hospital owning to Nicklaus’ continued interest in the event. He is not only the founder of the Memorial Tournament but also hosts the star-studded event on PGA Calendar.
Nicklaus also discussed his close family relatives, including five kids and 22 grandchildren and revealed that all of them are busy with their normal lives.
