Jack Nicklaus still confident of Tiger Woods making a come-back - PGA Tour Update
Legendary golfer, Jack Nicklaus, who is an 18 time major winner, was a little doubtful about his record lead and whether it will remain in the upcoming years. Nicklaus, who is nicknamed as ‘The Golden Bear’, was the best of his generation and now thinks
that his nearest competitor, Tiger Woods will be making a come-back in the next few tournaments this year and over-takes his record major wins.
As for Woods, he still remains winless since the former world number one was involved in scandals regarding his personal life in 2009. It is now more than two years since he last won a title. Due to his involvement in extra marital issues, which were disclosed
two years back, the 14 time major winner failed to make a come-back in the golfing arena and roar again. Last year at the Masters, critics were completely against the player and wrote that the ‘Tiger is still stuck in the Woods’.
Woods is just four short of breaking the Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles. As Tiger played in his first tournament after a break last year, he was tied for the fourth spot in the Masters which was an achievement for him. The 35-year-old was eliminated
in the first round last week at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships and it was the first time that he failed to go through to the next stage.
Nicklaus, in his recent interview with the media said, "I still am confident and hopeful that he'll break my record. I'm surprised that he has not bounced back by now. He has loads of talent in him which is yet to be displayed. Woods is an ambassador of
the sport all over the World." The record holder further added that he had a brief conversation with the 35-year-old last year in June and since then he has not spoken to him about his slump in performance.
Woods will not be participating in this week’s Honda Classic and is still working on his swing with his coach Sean Foley. His performance since the Masters last year has not been up to the standard of Woods. This year in the three tournaments he played,
Woods failed to make it among the top twenty.
The veteran Nicklaus still remembers the slump in his career back in 1979-80. He was in horrific touch and failed to make the cut in a tournament before the U.S. Open. However, his exquisite returned after a few months and he made a superb come-back.
Tiger needs four major wins to equal Nicklaus’ record and five to go past it. Many hopefuls favouring the former world number one are still waiting for the player to dominate again in the circuit. It will be next month at the Masters where Woods is expected
to unleash his talent.
