Jack Nicklaus suggests course selection to world number one Luke Donald for winning a major
World number one Luke Donald may have achieved the status on merit and hard work, but he remains as one of the many English golfers who reached the summit without winning a major. The prodigy also holds good for the former number one and another Englishman
Lee Westwood.
Westwood has a stellar career in the sport and is probably the most experienced and celebrated player of the sport after Tiger Woods, but he is time and again questioned about his consecutive failures in major championships. Westwood, at one stage, got so
irritated of the question that he started saying “no comments”.
Donald, on the likes of his countryman Westwood, is perhaps the most consistent players right now and is resting on the top slot without a major win on his belt.
The former giant of the sport, and a staggering 18-major winner, Jack Nicklaus came out to suggest the world number one of how he can create a victory in the majors ahead.
“Luke is not the longest hitter on Tour, so he has to make up for it elsewhere,” Nicklaus said Tuesday at the Memorial. “I always thought he was quite capable of winning major championships, but I think he’ll have to pick the right conditions for him to
do so and the right golf courses for him to do so.”
Nicklaus’ suggestions for the Englishman come from a long relationship the duo had with each other. Donald was paired with the Nicklaus in his last major appearance in 2005. Nicklaus has spent some time analyzing Donald’s style and skill and with decades
of experience and several invincible records on his belt, Nicklaus knows what he is talking about.
“Luke should always do well on the U.S. Open golf courses because length is not the primary factor.” Nicklaus was speaking on the upcoming event in Congressional next week. “Sometimes you get to the PGA Championship and it becomes a rainy situation, becomes
a little bit longer. Sometimes that may be harder for Luke, but there will be times when the golf course will be fast that he’ll play well.”
But “The Golden Bear” of sport was not without appreciation for Donald’s impressive run to the summit of Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). He lauded the way Donald has maintained his composure throughout the season and has pulled in several Top 10 finishes
in the first quarter of this year. Nicklaus hoped that the Englishman will continue to perform better in coming weeks to retain his title.
Donald achieved the world number status last week when he defeated Westwood to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. He also won the WGC Accenture Match Play title at Tucson earlier this year when he took over the then world number Martin Kaymer of
Germany.
Donald has performed splendidly well on both sides of the Atlantic and also finished runner-up in the Heritage on PGA Tour.
