Jack Nicklaus talks to media and players prior to the start of the Honda Classic – Golf News
The PGA Tour’s Honda Classic’s officials welcomed Jack Nicklaus at the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, when he entered the press room for a small session with the media on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.
This is not the first time he did this prior to any tournament as he does the same in the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance.
Likewise, he followed this practice in the first major of each year, The Masters Tournament, and many other tournaments that saw his participation.
Many young players visited him to take some advice on how to move on in tournaments, to which Nicklaus replied in a very humble manner.
He gave tips and suggestions to each and every player who visited and asked for help.
His generosity was evident at the Honda Classic, which donates the proceeds of the tournaments to charity and various other causes, such as Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation that works for children health services in the Palm Beach County.
He talked on how his foundation came into existence, when people had to travel two hours for Miami in order to solve complex medical issues of their children, as there was not a single medical facility nearby.
At that time, he and his wife, Barbara, realised the need of medical facilities in the area, which could deal with serious medical issues of the local citizens.
For this purpose, he contacted different people and found that there were many other generous people like Joe DiMaggio and Arnold Palmer ready to lend their services for him.
Both DiMaggio and Palmer lent their names to the children's hospitals in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, respectively.
Nicklaus’s life is full of philanthropic measures that he takes for the betterment of the humanity. One of his services includes the maintenance of the municipal golf course in North Palm Beach.
During the conference, a sports writer said that it has always been kind of Nicklaus to work for others without charging a single penny.
To that he replied, "Well, you've got young kids. I used to be like that. People would want me to play in a pro-am or something for free".
"You don't want to do it. But then your kids get older, they get out of the house, and then you're happy to start doing these things".
