Jack Nicklaus turns down The Presidents Cup offer
On Tuesday, the captains of the International and USA teams were present to mark the one year tee off for the Presidents Cup. Among them was present a legend, Jack Nicklaus. Jack had, in fact, designed the Muirfield Village so he is sort of a host to the
event.
To everybody’s surprise Fred Couples, captain of team USA asked the 18 time major winner, Nicklaus to be his assistant for the Presidents Cup.
However, Jack turned the offer down, saying that he has was a host to the event, so it was inappropriate for him to be a part of the American team.
"Freddie paid me a nice compliment by his suggestion," Nicklaus said Tuesday. "It was very thoughtful of him. I would love to, but I simply can't. I have duties as host, so that would not be the right thing to do".
There were other surprise names for assistants. Jay Haas has already accepted Couples’ offer but former NBA star Michael Jordan has yet to reply back.
Giving the former Chicago Bulls star a call was a huge surprise, considering the fact that he is not event linked to the game.
Jack has previously captained US Presidents Cup team four teams and initially, he thought that Fred was not serious about the offer but serious he was.
"I wasn't joking about it," Couples said. “When we were here (at Muirfield Village) last night, I said 'Could I pick him?'. A couple of guys from the Tour said, 'Yeah, he would love that.' And then a couple other guys - maybe one pretty high up there - said,
'He's hosting the thing, he can't do that.'”
Couples also plans to bring on board the defeated Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III but he said that he has not made an offer as yet. Fred is just giving some time to Love who had a tough time during the Ryder Cup.
Couples’ offer to Jack has received some criticism. People have come out and said that Fred is nowhere near to what Jack has achieved and making an offer for assistant was just a pure insult for the legend.
