Jack Russell and Basset Hound?

Getting a basset hound puppy soon.

I already have a Jack Russell who is 5 years old, she isnt that keen on other dogs and has a jealousy problem if we go to stroke another dog. But I think that my Jack Russell and the Basset Hound will learn to love each over.

Any good idea on how to train my Jack Russell to like the Basset Hound? Do You Think a Muzzle would be a good idea, just until they get used to each other?

  1. New puppies need a quiet place to rest both during the day and at night. Although they have short bursts of energy, they need a lot of sleep. Unfortunately, puppies that are not given a quiet place to rest will almost always annoy an older dog. Puppies chew the older dog’s neck and bite their ears; consequently the older dog gets fed up. Allow the older dog give the puppy a mild ticking off if he is  naughty, Don't expect your older dog to babysit or to put up with having its neck chewed or its ears pulled.

I know that some of the answerer's will tell you that they will sort themselves out, however it’s not fair. Let them play for a short time UNDER SUPERVISION, then when the puppy gets rough distract it and play with them. Afterwards, put the puppy to bed and give your older dog some peace. Give your older dogs extra attention and fun when the puppy is asleep. If your puppy is having four meals a day, you should also feed your older dog four meals a day. This will ensure that he does not feel left out of things; he needs extra love and attention.

  2. I have never agreed with putting a muzzle on a dog.  Before you bring the new dog home you need to have the dogs get to know each other on neutral ground.  If your dog doesn't take to the new dog on neutral ground he definitely won't like it when you bring the dog home.  Put both dogs on a leash and with a helper walk them past each other, close enough they can see each other but not reach.  If that goes well, bring them back by each other close enough to reach and check each other out.
