Jack Sock eases past Flavio Cipolla in second round – US Open 2012
Local wild card recipient, Jack Sock, got the better of the Italian contender, Flavio Cipolla, in straight sets at the US Open 2012 on Thursday. He jolted down a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 success against the Italian veteran to book a spot in the round of 32 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York City.
The American booming star stayed on the right path after tumbling Cipolla in their second outing at this last of the four Grand Slam events. The players previously fought each other at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles last month and after earning this fame, Sock avenged his defeat and levelled the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against the 28-year-old.
The 19-year-old made stunning start at Court number 17 at this major hard court event. After the Italian held his serve in the third game, Sock unleashed flurry of groundstrokes and reeled off five games in a row. He dusted away all three breakpoints he came across and cashed in both break chances to seal the opener by winning six games to two.
Sock maintained his intensity in the follow-up set and winded up opening five games through exquisite forehands from his box of tricks. Despite losing his serve in the sixth game, the American held his serve once more and clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 243rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Sock held his composure in the final set which counted the most. He superbly blocked all six breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves. The American cashed in the lone break chance in the ninth game and pulled out the victory with a 6-4 score line.
On the whole, Sock fired 15 aces and struck 41 winners. He produced a lower first serve share of 52 per cent in contrast with the Italian’s 72 per cent but acceptably availed 57 out of 109 points on it.
Next challenge for Sock is the 11th seed, Nicolas Almagro, who battled past Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in a five-set thriller to set up this battle.
