Jack Sock stuns Alex Bogomolov to reach round two – BB&T Atlanta Open 2012
Local wildcard entrant, Jack Sock, shocked the seventh seed, Alex Bogomolov, in a three-set thriller at the BB&T Atlanta Open 2012 on Monday. He summed up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory against the world number 51 to progress into the pre-quarters at this outdoor
hard court tournament taking place in Georgia, United States.
The American teenager showed his best tennis at the Atlantic Station and eventually bagged the match in their first meeting. After stealing the spotlight in two hours and 15 minutes, Sock assertively recorded his second tour level win and advanced into the
second round.
Sock made quick in-roads at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event and after drawing the first blood in the fourth game, he jumped to a 4-1 lead. He held his remaining serves with conviction and cashed in another break
chance in the last game, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to two.
The Russian veteran made a fitting reply in the follow-up set and earned the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. He dusted away all three breakpoints he came across and swiped entire serves, subsequently clinching the equaliser with
a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 326th in the South African ATP World Tour Rankings, Sock sought his momentum again in the final set and after breaking his rival’s serve in the second game, he went 3-0 up. Apart from losing his edge in the ninth game, the American quickly
cashed in another break chance and pocketed the decider with a 6-4 win.
Overall, the underdog spilled several double faults and clobbered a poor first serve share of 52 per cent in contrast with Bogomolov’s 74 per cent. However, he superbly blocked 10 out of 12 breakpoints he faced and capitalised on four out of 11 break chances
to register the victory.
Next up for Sock is his fellow citizen Steve Johnson who battled past Donald Young in three sets to set up this battle. Johnson lost his serve twice but broke his rival’s serve three times, eventually sealing the deal with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 score line.
