Jack Sock stuns Florian Mayer in opening round – US Open 2012
Local wild card entrant, Jack Sock, upset the 22nd seed, Florian Mayer, in a retirement victory at the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in Queens, United States. He was prevailing 6-3, 6-2, 3-2 when the German seed pulled out from the tournament due to an injury he sustained during the match on Monday. .
The 19-year-old showed exceptional skills and agility to dominate Mayer. After earning the retirement victory in one hour and 24 minutes, he comfortably advanced into the second round at this major hard court event taking place from 27th August to 9th September in Corona Park.
The booming American stated in an on-court interview after stealing the show:
"I think today is definitely good for the confidence and good for the overall game and everything going into the next round."
Sock made a strong entry at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. The American slid his remaining serves with self-assurance and eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to three.
Ranked 243rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Sock kept momentum rolling in the follow-up set. He got the desiderated break in the opening game and cruised to a 2-0 lead. The American cashed in another break chance and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
The teenager carried his winning ways in the third set and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. He maintained consistency in his game and managed to break the seed’s serve in the fifth game to go 3-2 up. However, Mayer was forced to retire after that, eventually rewarding Sock a spot in the round of 64.
Up next for Sock is the Italian contender, Flavio Cipolla, who battled past Slovenia’s Blaz Kavcic in a four-set thriller to set up this encounter.
The 25th seed, Fernando Verdasco, will accompany the local teenager in the second round. The Spaniard crushed the Portuguese challenger, Rui Machado, with a breadstick to power into the following round.
Verdasco will face off his compatriot, Albert Ramos, who bounced back to crush the local wild card entrant, Robby Ginepri, with a bagel to reach this spot.
