Jack Sparrow heads towards retirement
Jack Sparrow is one of the most popular and fancied racehorses to have participated in the racing events of Western New York. It has been revealed that the racehorse’s official retirement will be announced during the special winner’s circle ceremony that
will be held on the 19th of November. Sired by Humorous Harry out of Marie Adonno, the chestnut coloured colt was bred in Ohio and has started 159 times over a span of six years of harness racing career.
Out of these 159 times, the colt has the honour to have finished 49 times. On the other hand, his credit list has also recorded 31 second place finishes and 12 third place finishes. The talented racehorse started 37 times in Batavia Downs, out of which he
took over the field in 11 events. Moreover, he also finished a meet in a track record time of 1 minute and 58.1 seconds on the 22nd of August 2008.
The 7-year-old colt kicked off his harness racing career on the 8th of May 2005 at Painesville Fair where he won a matinee event in a time of 2 minutes and 25 seconds. During the first year of his racing career, Jack Sparrow managed to win 10
meets and also set a track of finishing an event at Northfield Park in a time of 2 minutes and 3 seconds.
In the year that followed, the racehorse went on to dominate the meets at The Meadows. Nonetheless, he did not contend many events in Freehold or Yonkers. Since Jack Sparrow raced primarily at The Meadows, he was cited Jimmy Mc Neight Jr.
Jack Sparrow was then transferred to one of the horse owners of Mc Neight’s dad, who had been on the Western New York circuit for over 20 years. The owner was called Michael Calimeri, and had not been very lucky with the horses.
Calimeri said, “I had not been doing well in the business and was thinking of getting out. We were looking for a trotter and Jimmy spotted Jack Sparrow racing at the Meadows. I liked what I saw and decided to take one last shot.”
The pleased owner added, “I reached in and claimed him for $ 20,000 on January 15, 2008. He turned out to be a great investment. He is the best horse I ever owned.”
The decorated horse will make his final public appearance for his passionate fans when he will lead the post parade next Friday.
