Jack Wilshere insists Arsenal can still win Premier League
Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere has dismissed talk of the Gunners already being out of the Premier League title race. Wilshere, who has excelled so far this season after being given a
more regular and responsible role, declared, "It's still early days, we're definitely still in it. I know we are seven points behind, but I think Chelsea will definitely drop points and we've just got to capitalise when they do.”
The Gunners meet Birmingham on Saturday on the back of two straight league defeats, after their surprising loss at the Emirates Stadium to West Brom was followed by yet another defeat
by Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge outfit has now won the last five meetings between the sides, but Wilshere adamantly denied that his side couldn’t beat Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
When asked if the current Arsenal side beat Chelsea, Wilshere claimed, "I don't think that's true. You saw we dominated the game for long periods, but we just didn't take our chances.
A couple of games before that we scored six, so it was just one of those days. In football it's what you do on the ball, but also make sure that when you haven't got the ball that you defend well. Obviously, Chelsea have got some good players and they showed
that on the day."
The Gunners have certainly given themselves a mountain to climb, even this early on in the campaign. There’s no doubt that this Arsenal squad is talented, but there are too many naive
moments in their play, which, along with their almost incessant bad luck on the injury front, means a title charge is still in the distance. Few would deny Wilshere his plaudits though, following an impressive start to the season, which has led to many labelling
him ‘the future of the England team.’ Arsene Wenger will no doubt be attempting to keep the 18-year-old’s feet on the ground.
