Jack Wilshere wants to add Patrick Vieira's destructiveness to his game
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has spoke of his desire to add some of the attributes possessed by former Gunner Patrick Vieira to his game in the future.
The 18-year-old starlet has sparkled in his new first team role with the Gunners this season, but insists he’d like to add a defensive steel to his already outstanding natural ability.
“I was on the books when Patrick (Vieira) was still here and I think the way he tackled and intercepted play is something I would add to my game,” Wilshere explained, while speaking at a Q&A session
with Arsenal fans.
The young midfielder is viewed as one of England’s finest prospects with his brilliant passing ability and vision, but his tackling has left a lot to be desired.
Being of small stature, it can be difficult to impose himself on the game in the rough and tumble of the midfield areas, and his red card against
Birmingham showed he was perhaps overly keen to leave his mark, leading to a rather reckless lunge.
Wilshere went on to state how he thought fellow Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is the league’s best midfielder, speaking of how the Spaniard offers him advice, while also noting his respect for Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira who
he clearly respects.
"I think at the minute Cesc Fabregas is the best midfielder in the Premier League but in the past there have been players like Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira - all complete midfielders. Cesc talks to me and tells me what I need to
do. He was 16 when he burst onto the scene so you just need to talk to the senior players like him and they help you through,” Wilshere noted.
