Jackie Stewart believes Lewis Hamilton should renew contract with McLaren – Formula 1 news
Three-time world champion Sir Jackie Stewart believes that Lewis Hamilton of McLaren should prefer McLaren over Mercedes and renew his contract.
McLaren have performed well in the ongoing 2012 Formula 1 season winning 5 races. Hamilton has answered the speculations about his contract by saying that he has not decided yet.
Stewart said that if it was his decision he would prefer McLaren over Mercedes because of its performances and growth and vast experience.
He said, “I personally would stay with McLaren. They have the resources, the money, the long-term commitment, huge experience.”
The three-time world champion said that Hamilton would not have achieved what he has without McLaren. He added that there is no security of Mercedes as they may stop racing if they faced some economic crises.
“You go to Mercedes, who are a wonderful company, it would take a five-minute decision from the board for them to decide to stop motor sport should there be a problem with the economy. So if I were thinking long term, then I would think to stay with McLaren.
I can't imagine how you could be more spoiled than being with McLaren,” he said.
Moreover, he said going to a new team will take him considerable time to adjust because there will be new a setup but if he understands McLaren and believes that the team is not able to achieve his desired car, then he should opt for Mercedes. However, he
said if the issue is not of a serious nature then he should stay at McLaren because the former champion does not know what will happen to him in the new company.
The Flying Scot believes that the McLaren driver may be looking for a change because he is with McLaren since his Karting days. He added that the credit for making lots of money goes to his British team, not to him. McLaren have played a very important role
in making him the type of driver he is, he added.
The triple world champion said that money will not play an important role in the current situation because if he goes to Mercedes, it is expected that he will make a lot of money there as well.
Therefore, this decision would not have financial significance but it will be a huge decision of his life and Stewart anticipates that the British driver will stay with McLaren.
