Jackie Stewart says 2012 F1 season was as good as it gets – Formula 1 news
Former F1 champion, Jackie Stewart, has admitted that the 2012 F1 season was as good a year as the F1 community could possibly expect it to be.
“It was a great season, as they have been for the last two or three because we've had really top racing drivers - the best the world's ever seen,” Stewart told Sky Sports. “This period, you've got Vettel and Alonso, but you've also got Webber, Hamilton and
Button and a few other really top guys. The teams are getting closer too. So this year is as good as a year as we could have had. To go to the last race and for the last race to be as complicated as it turned out to be was a fantastic finale.”
He said that this past season, the grid consisted of a collection of drivers that was as good as the one in 1960s and 1970s when there were the likes of Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, and himself. He added that there was a charm in those times which
had gone missing for a while but seems to be back with this year.
Stewart insisted that both Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing were deserving champions. He said that according to him, besides Vettel’s RB8, the best car on the grid was Lotus which only won one race but should have won three.
He said that what made the season even more exciting was the fact that Vettel for once did not have the best car in the beginning but by the end he was the quickest on the track. He particularly appreciated Vettel’s performance in the season ending Brazilian
GP where the Red Bull driver raced with a damaged car.
Stewart added that he would have celebrated even if it had been Alonso that won the championship as it was a wonderful season. The 2012 F1 season ended with Red Bull Racing becoming the fourth team to win three constructors’ in a row while Vettel became
the youngest triple champion by beating Alonso with three points.
