Jackson Bend retired, to start 2013 breeding season at Journeyman stud
Hall of Fame trainer, Nicholas P. Zito’s special horse, Jackson Bend, will retire at the age of 5 and stud in Florida at Journeyman Stud for a $5,000 fee, and he will start the 2013 breeding season there, as Nick Zito confirmed on 11 October, 2012.
Jacks or Better Farm’s Florida homebred has always been a prolific runner, but at times showing more than his worth when rated the underdog against more accomplished runners, Jackson Bend has the ability to turn the tides against the best in the business.
One such event, in his 2012 campaign, the son of Hear No Evil was outclassed on paper when Caleb’s Posse and Shackleford took the field in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap, but Jackson Bend over seven furlongs showed his mettle and bolted past his supposed superiors
and downed a massive grade 1 win.
Out of Tabasco Cat mare s**y Stockings, Jackson Bend started off the 2012 campaign in fine style when he went on to land the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope Stakes over a mile at Gulfstream Park.
Jackson Bend ended the 2011 campaign with a strong third place finish to winner, Amazombie, in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs.
At the age of 4, Jackson bend consistently hit the board, but the highlight of the season was when he defeated Jersey Town to win the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga in 2011.
In 2009, the runner put together a five race win-streak, when he swept the Florida Stallion Series Stakes for Juvenile at Calder race course.
"You can't put it in words; you can't put a price on that," Zito remarked. "For us, he was just a special, special horse, one of the best I've ever been around. You could go all over the world and you're not gonna find many horses like that."
The last three races of his racing career weren’t what Zito expected, as he went on to finish fifth in the Grade 1 Met Mile, fourth in the Grade 3 James Marvin Stakes at Saratoga, and staying at the same field Jackson Bend bowed out with a seventh place
finish in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes.
