Jacksonville Jaguars DL coach Joe Cullen defends choice of turning down Boston College job – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars defensive line coach Joe Cullen insists he has made the right choice of turning down a defensive coordinator role offer from Boston College to stick with the Jags in spite of all the lingering uncertainty in Jacksonville because of the
poor season ending by the team.
Joe said he wanted to remain a part of the Jags and in the National Football League (NFL) and there was no other motive for him to accept the role.
According to the coach:
"Steve (Addazio) and I talked. Obviously, for me, it wasn't the right timing. I love Jacksonville, love the Jaguars, really enjoy the people I work with. No matter what happens, I'm going to coach somewhere, whether it's Pop Warner or somewhere else. With
the timing of everything, it was best for me to stay in the NFL and help the Jaguars get to where I know we can get."
Head coach Mike Mularkey has also conceded it was a difficult decision to make for the assistant coach but it reflected on his dedication towards the Jags.
Mularkey said:
"I'm not surprised by Joe. He's dedicated to what he's doing and he thinks we're close to what we're doing. I'm sure it's a tough decision."
Cullen admitted he, as any other coach with the Jags, faces uncertainty about his prospects with the team, given they are going to end the season at the worst-ever record. He said the risk was worth taking instead of moving out in a sense of job security
fear.
The market is abuzz with speculations that Jags’ first-year owner Shahid Khan might approve rash changes in all spheres of the team, and this includes front office and coaching department. The owner himself has neither denied nor validated credibility of
these reports.
Nevertheless, almost all commentators agree that the team is heading into a rebuilding phase, which will certainly lead to changes at all levels, no matter if they are comprehensive or to a limited extent.
This makes Cullen as much prone to lose his job as any other coach of the team, and there is a view that Cullen by deciding to stay in Jacksonville might have risked loss of an opportunity to timely move out. Cullen is confident he has made the right choice
for his future, though.
