Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert faces Cincinnati Bengals’ challenge to prove – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert faces another tough performance task versus the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, and although he has been celebrated for the perfect pass in closing seconds of the game against the Indianapolis Colts on past
Sunday, a question of consistency still dominates his pro career prospects.
Wide receiver Cecil Shorts completed the throw from Gabbert for the 80-yard touchdown to help the team register their first win of the season but as coach Mike Mularkey has pinpointed the single display of their skills does not compensate inconsistency.
The official has backed both players to prove they are consistent winners.
It remains to be seen how Blaine comes out on the field versus Bengals because memory of his worst record of 53 yards, which he had ended up with in the game before the Colts’ tie, is very much fresh on the coach’s mind and he must be watching him closely.
The second-year quarterback had done well in the opening game, bringing the team almost on the verge of a win versus the Minnesota Vikings but then nosedived in the next. The two performances have reflected to be the two ends of the same coin that will never
meet, and this is what the coach has drawn Blaine’s attention to.
There is a unanimous agreement among the commentators that Blaine has improved if compared with his performance during the rookie season but his exposure to failures to the same extent is something preventing them to better rate his potential.
It is not surprising if a pro offence leader fails in the first year of his career but it is also true that many of them bounce back strongly in the second. In Blaine’s case, it is yet to be seen.
Although it is a matter of only three games that the quarterback has played so far this season, his potential to come out of the rookie year’s gloom should be clearer before the next few games, when the season is almost halfway through.
Overall, the situation does not appear to be favouring the quarterback given the amount of pressure he should expect to increase with the passage of each game from now on. It is the best opportunity for him to prove himself as the leader.
