Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert hits back at critics after better start – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars’ second year quarterback Blaine Gabbert has shown he is finding it hard to get over with the battering he had received from media and critics over the shaky start to his career last year.
Blaine sounded to be very confident while speaking at a function at the Jags’ hotel on Thursday, after showing clear signs of improvement in the preseason opener of the team. He said he has been trained to handle the criticism as it is a part of his job.
The quarterback said:
"I think that's part of our job description: Deal with the c**p. But for people to say [I'm scared], I just don't understand it. They've never played in the NFL. They really don't know what goes on, or what happens.”
He added:
"So that argument, I think, is just a copout for people to make because they're – I don't want to necessarily want to say jealous – but, they couldn't do my job. And that's the truth. They can't do my job."
Gabbert continuously failed as a starter last season, attracting criticism more often, but the critics lashed out at former coach Del Rio even more over the official’s choice of leaving the then rookie on the starting line in spite of his consistent failings.
Rio, at the end, lost his job in the same wave of criticism.
Some commentators are not impressed with the latest outburst of Gabbert about the criticism of last year. They believe that it is just a beginning. It is preseason phase when the stakes are not much higher for any of the stakeholders.
Also, it is not necessary that a player who is successful in preseason remains to be equally impressive during regular season. It is a great development for the second year QB that he has improved from the last season’s form level but he must not be carried
away by the excitement.
The calculations and estimates at a rather premature phase can lead to complacency and possibly take a toll on his performance. He is nevertheless backed by the team for better run this season.
