Jacksonville Jaguars’ Tim Tebow pursuit: owner Shahid Khan undeterred by QB’s Jets move-NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars’ owner, Shahid Khan, has remained undeterred by the choice of former Denver Broncos’ quarterback, Tim Tebow, not coming to Jacksonville, saying had the player chosen to join Jaguars, it could have been a costly decision for him as well
as for the team.
A couple of reports had disclosed Jaguars’ interest in signing Tebow following the talk of his trade by Broncos, who had opted for signing former Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, Peyton Manning.
Some sections of media claimed that the desire of pursuing Tebow’s signing was of Jaguars owner’s, not of head coach, Mike Mularkey or general manager, Gene Smith.
Mularkey, after Tebow’s move to the New York Jets, confirmed that he was as keener on signing him as the owner or any other member of Jaguars.
He said it will be difficult for any of their officials to decline to take the player like Tebow on board if he is available in the market.
Now, Khan has come out with further clarity to the situation. He said that Jaguars were not right contender for Tebow and had the player decided to move Jacksonville it could not serve any good to him and the team.
Khan said:
"That would have been the worst thing for Jacksonville and the worst thing for him. He didn't want to come, obviously. Any one of the 53 players we have, have to be committed to Jacksonville, making us be the best team we are. The question was: Did he want
to come? And if the decision had been taken out (of his hands) and we got him that would not be good for him, or for us."
He elaborated there was no question of pursuing the player if his heart was going out for some other side. So, the move could have been resulted in from direct involvement of the player, he added.
Jaguars’ new owner has backed the team to be consistent winners on the field since he formally accepted the ownership of the team on January 04, 2012.
He enjoys the support of Mike Mularkey and Gene Smith in all the hiring firing choices.
Mularkey has met rookie quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, soon after taking over the coaching charge from the interim coach, Mel Tucker.
The coach has backed the rookie, who is coming back to the squad into second year of his professional career next season, for the starting role.
Next (2012) NFL season will be Jaguars first with new owner and new head coach and their performance on the field remains to be seen. The owner has so far remained ambitious and hopeful of improved form of the team.
