Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon backs Brandon Weeden for success at Cleveland Browns – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars’ troubled wide receiver, Justin Blackmon, who has been at the receiving end of throws from his former college colleague Brandon Weeden, Cleveland Browns’ quarterback, has spoken of great potential for the rookie QB’s
success in Cleveland.
Justin, who was recently arrested and released on the driving under influence (DUI) charge, has played with Brandon in the college league and believes the quarterback will have a great fan-following and support in Cleveland.
He said:
"When he came in during my freshman year, we noticed right away that he could really throw the ball. We had swollen fingers after catching his throws."
Weeden is in competition with Cleveland Browns' incumbent QB, Colt McCoy, for the starting position.
He has so far been appreciated quite well by the team’s top brasses. As a matter of fact, he is seen as the natural offence leader by the managers, already putting Colt’s prospects on the uncertainty.
It is difficult at the moment for almost the entire Browns establishment to make Weeden as their final choice given he has not showed off his skills in a full training session or real game environment.
While there is a lingering question about the longer stay of McCoy with Browns, they do not want to gamble on their QB situation by sending the incumbent off to another team in the league.
The training camp, which the team is due to open later this month, is expected to clear the situation at both ends.
Weeden recently met Blackmon, after the latter landed in the trouble. Both players are good friends and often spend some time together. Both of them are also on the prospects of pro career success and growth.
Weeden’s first-year stint is particularly important for him as it will matter the most to his future success as an offence leader. Any failing on the starting position can turn his career into the same level of uncertainty his competitor
and senior colleague, Colt McCoy, is through at present.
So far, he has impressed onlookers at the mandatory minicamp and some other training activities but his testing as a starter in a full-game environment is yet due.
As far as the fan-following is concerned, Weeden has already made good contacts with local football community members and turns out to be well likened face among local fans.
Given he is up against the incumbent McCoy, he seems to have done remarkably well at all ends this far.
