Jacksonville Jaguars claim Trent Edwards off waivers
It didn't take long for ex-Bills quarterback Trent Edwards to find a new home. The Jacksonville Jaguars have claimed the 26-year-old pivot off waivers on Tuesday. Edwards is expected to sign a new contract and join his new teammates on Wednesday.
In order to make room on the roster for Edwards, the Jaguars have placed linebacker Alvin Bowen on waivers.
Edwards is not likely to assume the starting role immediately, but will be seen initially as a viable second option to the Jags present starting quarterback David Garrard.
But if Garrard continues to struggle, Edwards could be thrust into action quickly, especially since Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio's confidence in his current starting quarterback is not at a hundred percent.
"As long as he's (Garrard) our best option, we'll continue to go with him," Del Rio said Monday.
Garrard signed the franchise's most lucrative contract in 2008 when he penned a six-year, $60 million extension, but his numbers have been mediocre ever since and he has been described by Del Rio himself as a "second-tier quarterback".
Garrard has struggled early this season, leading to his replacement in week two by backup Luke McCown in their 38-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers. His struggles continued in week three when the Jags were crushed 28-3 by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Edwards fell out of favor in Buffalo after a couple of rocky starts, and started the season with two straight losses. He was replaced in week three by Ryan Fitzpatrick, who fared no better with a loss, but Fitzpatrick put up decent numbers and the Bills
felt it was time for a change, letting Edwards go after just over three seasons.
The 2007 third-round draft pick will be looking for a fresh start in a new city and with a new offence.
