Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey backs WR Cecil Shorts for consistency – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey has backed rookie wide receiver Cecil Shorts for consistency in his form after his miraculous 80-yard touchdown on a throw from quarterback Blaine Gabbert helped them register a win over the Indianapolis Colts in
closing seconds of the game on past Sunday.
While the player is bombarded with text messages over the successful completion of the last reception from friends and foes alike, the coach has drawn his attention towards the element of sustainability of the same level of performance in each game.
The coach said:
"He missed some throws (Sunday) and he made some great throws. Consistency is definitely a must from everybody, but I think just standing in there and making that last throw for the touchdown says a lot about the guy. We need him consistently for the entire
game, and I think he's still young at this position."
Mularkey has shown to be wary of the over-celebration of successful reception by the player given his experience with performance of the quarterback Blaine Gabbert. He has seen some impressive spells of performances from the quarterback and then witnessed
him falling at the lowest level of ever achieved 53 yards.
This is where the Jaguars are hurt. Although their all players have the potential to give match-winning performances, their inconsistency takes even heavier toll on the team’s success in the league.
Wide receiver Justin Blackmon is another player who is still finding ways to exploit his potential to an optimum level and the coach has backed him to keep on the efforts.
He said:
"I think he's pressing a little bit. He's getting a little frustrated that he'd like to be more productive. He's got to stay patient. I said that to him (Sunday), `Be patient. They're coming. The ball is coming.' We'll do a better job of trying to get it
to him more if we can. But when we do, he's got to make those catches."
Blackmon has been rated to be a future’s class act for the team but unfortunately has so far struggled to find form. The coach is prepared to give him space and time to keep on working as long as he remains confident and hopeful.
