Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey defends Blaine Gabbert as offence leader – NFL News
The credibility of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ decision to stick to quarterback Blaine Gabbert has once again become a subject of discussions and questions, amid coach Mike Mularkey coming to the offence leader’s defence as strongly as former coach Del Rio
did a season earlier.
Mike has rebuffed suggestions that the Jags’ current run of failures is because of poor performance of the quarterback. He said one player should not be subjected to blame game; it is responsibility of the entire offensive line to make scoring plays.
The coach said:
"I don't think it's one guy. You always go to that guy. Not in here. Everybody is held accountable for why the offense is not functioning at a high level consistently, and I think that goes for everybody. That's including the coaches.”
He added:
"Everybody's responsible, I believe, and I think we can always make each other better. Each position can play off of each other, but we've all got to play at a high level and coach at a high level for it to go. Not just one guy."
The Jags are struggling to put up some respectable show on the field. They have only a single win on the board. With the season halfway through, a number of questions have started emerging around the ability of Blaine to lead the offence from front.
He is a second-year QB now, and faced a similar situation last year, under supervision of then coach Del Rio. The poor Rio at the end lost his job under the same wave of criticism but the team was sold to Shahid Khan – the Pakistan-born current owner.
The first-year coach Mike Mularkey took a daring step and stuck with Blaine as their offence leader. The coach said he had warned the QB to improve or else think of alternatives, which are yet unknown.
Again, the media debate has hit the choice of the coach and other members of the Jaguars organisation to stick with Blaine. With Mularkey explaining the situation, it is expected that Gabbert will be their offence leader for rest of the season.
