Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey foresees potential in rookie QB Blaine Gabbert – NFL News
In one of his rare statements since joining Jacksonville Jaguars, the head coach, Mike Mularkey, has spoken of some similarity between their rookie quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, and Atlanta Falcons’ QB, Matt Ryan, who is one of the most successfully groomed
players of Mukarkey’s coaching career.
It remains a question if he is be able to get as much out of the rookie Gabbert as he did from Ryan, the coach has apparently boasted about his achievement in coaching the Falcons’ QB to give a record performance during first year of his career and then
developed to be one of the most successful quarterbacks on the league.
This was the only second assurance from Jaguars new head coach since taking over the reign by him last month (January 2012).
Earlier, he had spoken of the Jaguars potential to be consistent winners on the field, which came in line with hopes of their new owner, Shahid Khan.
Mr Khan soon after taking over the side from their former owner, Wayne Weaver, had spoken of his ambitions of turning the side to be a consistent winner on the field and a role model off the field.
Mularkey’s claim about Gabbert might be a surprise for many, especially to those who had seen his consistent failings on the start line under the reign of their former coach, Del Rio.
Just like Mularkey, Rio had remained persistent with Gabbert in the wake of his hopes of him performing better at some point during the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season.
The former coach thought that the rookie had not been given enough opportunities to show off his potential and skills.
Gabbert after failing in his first eight starts improved a bit in last few games of the season, mostly under the supervision of their interim coach, Mel Tucker.
Now Mularkey hopes that after having spent a year on the field, Blaine Gabbert, knows enough about the game and importance of him performing better.
The first act of the new coach after confirmation of his appointment by the team’s management was the meeting between him and Gabbert, and he posed his confidence into the rookie quarterback.
He said that the player himself knows of giving a better performance since he had spent a year at the position and he is aware that there is no alternative before him if he fails again.
It will be seen how much he is able to instinct into the player and how much will he give him back through improvement of his performance, Mularkey would be aware of the fact that the quarterback had remained one of the main sources of criticism against
their former coach, costing his job at the end.
Jaguars’ former owner sacked Rio on November 29, 2011, the day he also sold his franchise to the new owner in a deal worth $770 million.
The new owner has backed Mularkey, calling him a smart choice, and if he is able to groom Gabbert to be one of successful quarterbacks, it will be another chapter in his success story.
