Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey hails QB Blaine Gabbert’s form – NFL News
The Jacksonville Jaguars must be pleased that second year quarterback Blaine Gabbert proved himself to be a transformed player in the preseason opener against the reigning Super Bowl champions New York Giants so much that some commentators see him looking
like a Pro Bowl material.
Yet both, the QB and coaches, agree that the player has still got a long way to travel and in spite of attaining success in a majority of his plays during Friday’s game, which Jaguars won with a narrow margin of one point (32-31), he has to improve the level
of consistency, a favourite subject for discussions by the player.
Independently, game analysts saw him inconsistent in his plays, which should be a matter of concern for him. The player often propagates a higher level of consistency but on the ground he proved himself heading otherwise.
Blaine says:
"That's the way you want to start football games. Not everything was perfect, but the biggest thing that matters is getting a touchdown."
Even more pleased was first year coach Mike Mularkey who at the time of joining Jaguars as head coach had gone against the tide to bet on Blaine, also warning him to improve or face exit. The coach said of his latest appearance:
"I was extremely proud of Blaine tonight. No more pressure on him than anybody in the stadium when he walked into that huddle. And to take a team 90 yards and the things he did on third down. To do it all right and not do anything self-inflicted and move
the ball down there against that defence, I was very proud of him."
It must be exciting for the player to later watch recording of his performance. As mentioned by the coach, Blaine was under immense pressure to perform. It is not just the new coach but the new owner Shahid Khan, who has often spoken of his ambitions of
seeing his franchise as consistent winners on the field.
He must be happy over the performance of the QB, and also of his team. It was a great outcome for the team to have beaten the reigning champions.
