Jacksonville Jaguars consolidate roster to meet 53-man squad Friday deadline – NFL News
The Jacksonville Jaguars are taking desperate measures to trim down the number of players on the pay roster to 53 to meet this Friday deadline of the National Football League (NFL), which requires all teams to consolidate their rosters before entering the
regular season phase.
As part of the drive, the team has put a number of players on the injured reserve (IR) list, placed a few on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and put a couple more on the waivers.
The Jaguars are not the alone team to have taken the extreme steps, almost all teams have met the 75-member roster deadline of Monday and are on the way to fulfil 53-man squad requirement by this Friday.
As per rules of the professional league regulator, all teams have to maintain a 53-man roster from the week starting next Monday, which during the offseason phase are allowed to have 93 players each.
The players who have been placed on the IR list are guard Drew Nowak, tight end Matt Veldman, centre John Estes and guard Jason Spitz. The team has also waived fullback Brock Bolen with a knee injury.
Almost all other players are fresh signees, taken on board this year by the team to provide assistance to their key players during training camp. It is a normal practice in the league with nothing much to lose by any side.
It is pertinent to mention that the Jaguars are making fresh start this year with a new coach, and also the new owner, Shahid Khan.
The team’s form during the preseason phase has not been very impressive. Their loss against the Baltimore Ravens is the lowest point of their performance and the first year coach Mike Mularkey admitted to have made many mistakes, which they could have easily
avoided.
He is still hopeful of the team’s chances to give a better performance during the season starting from September 09. His expectations from second year quarterback Blaine Gabbert are particularly higher, and in spite of the impressive start to the preseason
campaign Blaine still needs to step up his game to a remarkable level.
