Jacksonville Jaguars free agent crop, other players, officials face uncertain future – NFL News
The Jacksonville Jaguars have as many as seven free agent players who are uncertain about their future with or without the Jags as much as some of other players and officials – all fear a possibility of sweeping change at the end of the season because of
the poor performance by the team.
Although owner Shahid Khan has recently discarded an impression that he might commit a rash cleansing drive in the team given he has not achieved the desired results, from general manager Gene Smith, coach Mike Mularkey to quarterback Blaine Gabbert many
people face axing at the end of the season.
One of the free agent players, Eben Britton, said:
"Things start getting crazy when you aren't winning. All kinds of (stuff) happen. Winning and losing changes life. It changes the way things go."
The free agent players are linebacker Daryl Smith, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, cornerbacks Derek Cox and Rashean Mathis, running back Rashad Jennings, fullback Greg Jones and guard Eben Britton.
It is the most vulnerable group but some of the regular players are at an equal risk being let go unceremoniously at the end of the season given the Jags are among the worst teams of the season.
Shahid Khan after formally taking over his side earlier this year had set an ambitious target for the team to become consistent winners on the field but in reality the Jags into first year with Khan as owner are consistent losers, instead.
A number of media reports have drawn the owner’s attention towards continued pathetic run of his team but very recently he strongly defended the unit saying although they have been losing, they were not a bad side at all positions, after all.
He analyses his team’s performance through business rationale that some companies lose in the beginning and some are winners straightaway, saying he has faith in his officials and players how they are taking the side forward.
Still, some commentators think the owner might make some surprise changes at the end of the season. The most vulnerable person among staff, they think, is the GM because he has been at the helm of all the team’s affairs since 2009 but the Jags have not much
changed on the field under his reign.
Among players, they think, QB Blaine Gabbert might face uncertainty given he has failed them twice in a row. He is least likely to take charge of the offence once again.
