Jacksonville Jaguars have highest cap surplus of $25.1 million in the league – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars are the only team in the National Football League (NFL) who have the highest amount of cap surplus, $25.1 million, available on their pay roster.
It may come as good as well as bad news for Maurice Jones-Drew and Josh Scobee, who have demanded new deals from the team, while the management persists they should honour the terms on their existing contracts.
MJD is particularly not happy given general manager, Gene Smith, has asked him to service the remaining two years left on his existing contract.
Scobee is not pleased either. His agent, Ken Harris, has disclosed for the first time that he has not heard back from the managers since exchange of their unknown offers months ago.
Ken admits to be out of contact with Jaguars and there is no progress towards agreeing fresh deal terms for his client.
Maurice has pleaded his case on more than one occasion, drawing the managers’ attention to the payout, which is far less than what his counterparts with other teams are earning.
Some commentators note that players at MJD’s position are earning at least two times higher than what he does, and have backed his request for an increase in the payout.
Now the news of availability of the space on the team's roster should baffle the players and their agents to understand why the team is reluctant to redo their deals.
Both players have hoped to win new contracts respectively by training camp, due to start at the end of next month.
A breakthrough, however, is unlikely given all the stakeholders are adamant to concede even an inch of ground to each other’s advantage.
The start to formal negotiation process will likely prove their ability to find a common ground, but none of the players know when the talks will begin.
The situation is not encouraging for the players given their agents have admitted to be through a communication deadlock with the management.
Away from the deals matters, Jaguars look to save $25.1 million for spending some time during the season. They do not aim to commit any funds to the free agency at the moment.
