Jacksonville Jaguars players face hefty fines on public disclosure of injuries – NFL News
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ injury-disclosure related hefty fine proposal faces an investigation from the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) but coach Mike Mularkey – the orchestrator of the proposed penalty measures –
is confident about getting it cleared from the NFL.
As per the proposal, the head coach has warned the players against publically disclosing their injury details and said from now on they can get hefty fines on violation of the rule.
Rashean Mathis – the Jags cornerback and the team’s representative on the NFLPA – said the fine proposed is up to $10,000. He said the players apparently do not have an objection to the proposal and a majority of them are behind the coach.
He said:
"We're supporting the coach and that's what it's all about."
Although the news did not surprise any football community circle so much that they could feed and nurture it to become a controversy, the players association said they are interested to investigate the proposal.
The review is nothing on the surface given the union, which is meant to take care of the players interests, has a right to look into the matter.
The planned inquiry has not left an impression on the Jags head coach at least, as Mularkey said they have sought approval of the regulator – NFL – to the proposed measures. "Yes, absolutely," was his answer when asked if the team had
sent its fine proposal for the NFL’s approval, a mandatory requirement for all teams.
It is not clear which aspects of the proposal the players union is going to look into. Mathis backs the steps and according to him so does other players. Still, some commentators believe it is not a bad idea to review the proposal.
If the proposal is cleared and the measure is put in place, the players will be required to keep a mum on giving details of their injury and recovery status through public statements. This apparently will become a matter left for the team
to handle. In spite of the players backing, it is probably the strictest penalty measure ever introduced by a team.
