Jacksonville Jaguars retain OT William Robinson on long-term contract-NFL News
Offensive tackle, William Robinson, has avoided the free agency as his employers, the Jacksonville Jaguars, agreed to land him a long-term contract on Monday, March 12, 2012. He would have hit the free agency market on Tuesday if the deal had not been reached.
Neither the tenure of the new deal nor its value has been disclosed by the management.
Jaguars will come out in the 2012-13 National Football League (NFL) season with new owner, new head coach and quite a few new assistant coaches.
The team has released some of its players as a part of the rebuilding process, which had started since the interim coach, Mel Tucker, took over the coaching charge at the end of November 2011.
Tucker replaced the former coach, Del Rio, who was sacked by the previous owner, Wayne Weaver, on November 29, 2011, the day he announced selling of his franchise to its present owner, Shahid Khan.
In addition to waiving some players, Jaguars have decided to retain a number of them including Robinson.
However, he could have had a chance of coming back to Jaguars, since he was going to be a restricted agent and the team had option of matching his offered price and thus bringing him back.
Robinson was claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars off the waiver from the New Orleans Saints on December 29, 2011. He did not get much chance of playing for the side last year since his joining came near to the end of the regular season.
Jaguars ended their last season’s run in the regular season, with their last winning game against the Indianapolis Colts, played on January 01, 2012.
Now, the player will get an opportunity to perform in the next regular season, starting in September this year.
Jaguars, who believe the player did not have many opportunities in the last season, are equally hopeful about his form and performance.
Jaguars approximately have $45 million left to touch the cap level, but the owner is not up for spending the money aimlessly.
While taking a shot at Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins – the two franchises that apparently spend more money on hiring players – Khan said:
"If there was a relationship between money spent and results on the field, probably the Redskins and the Cowboys would have won a bunch of Super Bowls by now. That's what makes football so interesting."
The new owner has repeatedly said that he wanted to make Jacksonville Jaguars a consistent winner on the field, and it is yet to be proven how he fulfils the ambitions and how much he is willing to spend on finding, training and grooming the talent.
