Jacksonville Jaguars sign two assistant coaches, in search for more – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars said on Thursday, January 19, 2012, that they have further expanded the list of their assistant coaching staff under the reign of their new head coach, Mike Mularkey.
The new signees include Tony Oden to the position of secondary coach.
Oden has worked as a defensive backs coach at the Orleans Saints for five years.
He was promoted to take over the responsibilities of secondary coach by the Saints during the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season.
Meanwhile, Jaguars' management confirmed to also have taken Greg Olson on board to serve as an assistant head of quarterbacks' coach.
Olson is a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers' coach. He is into his eleventh year in the league.
Jacksonville Jaguars have continued their drive of hiring new staff to the team after their taking over by the new owner, Shahid Khan.
Since hiring of their new head coach, the team’s general manager, Gene Smith, has continued with hiring of assistant coaching staff under the head coach.
Mularkey has been signed by the Jaguars to replace their former coach, Del Rio, and since his joining, a couple of weeks ago, he has taken on board a number of assistant coaches to fill the vacant positions.
More hiring is expected in the coming days as according to the team management there were still in need of more assistants. They have continued to interview a number of officials at various teams as potential candidates to their coaching department.
The new owner has launched the rebuilding process of the franchise with next season on mind. Mr Khan has repeatedly spoken of his ambitions of turning around the Jaguars to be a consistent winner on the field and a role model off the field.
He has expressed confidence into his new head coach, calling him a smart choice, and hoping he will lead the team from the front to help him achieve the next year’s target.
Mularkey was an offensive coach at the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Jags and his appointment reflects on the team’s priority to build a strong offence line while going into the next NFL season.
The hiring of staff is expected to be followed by reshuffling in the squad and possible signing of new players. Again, focused is expected to be on the offensive department.
The new coach has already talked to their rookie quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, who had come under great criticism in 2011 NFL season. The player who was in the first year of his pro career failed in a majority of the starts he had made.
He was also the main source of criticism against the former head coach, Del Rio, who despite the repeated failures remained persistent with Blaine at the starting position.
