Jacksonville Jaguars work out 3-year deal for former New York Giants’ cornerback Aaron Ross-NFL News
The Jacksonville Jaguars were reported on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, to have landed a three-year contract to former New York Giants’ cornerback, Aaron Ross.
Ross who was tipped to move to Jaguars earlier was expected to sign the deal later in the day to make his arrival in Jacksonville official.
Terms of the deal other than that it has the three years tenure were not made available by either of the parties. They could be seen coming after the official signing of the contract.
Some media reports however claimed that the value of the deal was going to be somewhere around $15.3 million.
The reports added that the payout indicates that the player might be considered for the starting position and if that happens he must be competing directly with the veteran Rashean Mathis.
The situation is set to be clearer once the team management comes out with an official confirmation of the appointment. The coach, Mike Mularkey, is expected to throw a light on the sort of arrangement the team is going to come out with next season.
Mathis has recently signed a year deal with the team. He missed most part of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season due to pending recovery from an earlier injury.
Ross was inducted in the New York Giants as a first-round draft pick in 2007 and has been playing consistently well for the side, since then.
Jaguars have come with considerable of amount of changes since the team installed the new management, led by their general manager, Gene Smith.
The head coach, Mike Mularkey, who has deserted the Baltimore Ravens to replace Jaguars former interim coach, Mel Tucker, is said to be the leading force contributing to the final decisions and choice of the players.
A day earlier the team was said to be interested in trade for former Denver Broncos’ quarterback, Tim Tebow, but that plan ended prematurely after the New York Jets landed a deal with him.
Since joining the side officially in January this year (2012), Mularkey has remained hopeful about Jaguars ability for a turnaround next season, following a miserable year earlier, which was full of crisis for them.
Jaguars, who finished the last season with a 5-11 record, are aiming to boost squad strength at certain positions, in line with the wish of the new owner, Shahid Khan, who wants the team to be consistent winners on the field.
Jaguars have not touched the spot of the quarterback so far, except for the reported interest in Tebow, and according to the head coach they had a belief in the rookie, Blaine Gabbert, to perform better when he comes back to the side into second year of
his professional league career.
