Jaclyn Sweeney clinches victory at Credit Union Challenge 2012
The Credit Union Challenge 2012 ended with a flurry of excitement on Sunday, with American Jaclyn Sweeney grabbing her first Symetra Tour victory after she posted an overall 203 on the leaderboard.
Sweeney looked more than happy after she outshone her competent rivals Emma Jandel, Rachel Connor and Olivia Jordan-Higgins of England in the final round. The American star displayed an electrifying performance on the last day of the much-hyped tournament as she fired a 68 on the leaderboard.
On the other hand, her nearest rival Jordan-Higgins, who came close to toppling Sweeney in the final moments, also registered a 68 in the final round, rattling most of the players in the top 10.
Sweeney’s last-round performance was notable, as she looked determined to do her best on the course this time. She kicked off the round with plenty of enthusiasm on Sunday, as she parred the first four holes. She, however faltered on the 5th holes, as she could not handle the ball well and ended up carding a bogey.
Although she could not score any birdie on the front nine, she ramped up pressure on her nearest rivals on the back nine by shooting four birdies and no bogey.
Analysts said that the star golfer gained plenty of confidence after clinching her first Symetra Tour victory. They said that the Sweeney has been seeking to make it to the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) roster, and now that she has achieved that goal in grand style, she is going to be put under scrutiny once she starts playing at a bigger stage.
On the other hand, Jordan-Higgins, who put her best foot forward in all the three rounds, lucked out in the last moments and lost her ground.
Speaking to the media at the end of the match, Sweeney said that she played a natural game and did not let other contenders pressurise her in the final round. She added that she might have played well on the back nine, but parring the first three holes on the back nine helped her consolidate her position on the leaderboard.
“I really just tried to be positive,” said the winner. “It helped that I made putts to save par on the first three holes”.
