Jacob Hansford and Nic Groenewald secure gold medals – Australian State Teams Age SC Championships
Jacob Hansford of New South Wales (NSW) and Nic Groenewald of Victoria (VIC) conquered gold medals of 200m butterfly and 200m back-stroke in Boys 14-15 years old class, on third day of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships.
The meet competed on September 19, after its’ final session at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra. With the exception of above mentioned events, the session also included 1500m freestyle and 4*100m medley relay.
The 15-year-old Hansford proved his dominance for the crown of distant butterfly discipline, by clocking an astounding time of 2 minutes and 04.06 seconds. With his impressive effort, he remained 1.29 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Andrew Walker
of Western Australia (WA), who submitted a time of 2 minutes and 05.35 seconds for silver medal. Walker was trailed by Ka Ho Kwong of QLD, as he was 1.83 seconds slower than him and reported a time of 2 minutes and 06.53 seconds for bronze medal.
Next was the 200m back-stroke meet, where Groenewald remained prominently away from his fellow swimmers and secured top of podium for gold medal, with a timing of 2 minutes and 01.85 seconds. He was in a lead of almost six seconds over Edward Marks of NSW,
who reached the podium silver medal, by posting a time of 2 minutes and 07.65 seconds. The third spot of the race was owned by QLD’s Mitchell Adams, who stayed just 0.15 seconds behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 07.80 seconds.
In the meantime, VIC’s Mack Horton presented a phenomenal effort in the 1500m freestyle race, where the 15-year-old swimmer completed his swim in a new age group record of 15 minutes and 14.96 seconds. His time was 12.41 seconds under the previous mark of
15 minutes and 26.55 seconds, set by Jordan Harrison of QLD in 2010. The gold medallist was chased by Lach Colquhoun of NSW, who produced a time of 16 minutes and 03.21 seconds for silver medal. Christo Deegan South Australia (SA) emerged as third position
holder of the swim and ended his sprint in 16 minutes and 03.35 seconds.
Team A of NSW occupied gold medal of 4*100m medley relay by touching the wall in 3 minutes and 50.37 seconds. The squad was followed by VIC and QLD, who posted timings of 3:52.03 and 3:52.70 minutes, respectively.
In addition, the arena acknowledged the commendable swims of all participants in their respective events. Furthermore, podium finishers were called upon the medal rostrum for their remarkable efforts after completion of the session.
