Jacob Oram hopes “home truths” will help the Kiwis to overcome their failings
Jacob Oram, New Zealand’s all-rounder, hoped that the heart-to-heart player meeting that took place in the late hours of Thursday will serve as a catalyst for their side to overcome their failings.
“We were just trying to get to the bottom of what’s going on because it’s happening too often for it to just be a coincidence,” Oram admitted ahead of tomorrow’s final dead rubber against Pakistan at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Auckland-c766.
New Zealand’s captain Daniel Vettori called on a player meeting in the dressing room after his team slumped to another batting debacle on Thursday. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 stamped a 41-run victory at Hamilton to secure an unassailable 3-1 lead in a six-match series.
Oram told the reporters that the players laid out some “home truths” in the open and the honest discussion lasted about 90 minutes. He admitted that there were loads of “healthy debates” but there was nothing personal. He also stated that the meeting featured
only the players, and no one from the team management was present.
“There was a lot said and that’s going to stay within the changing room, but it’s basically about guys doing their jobs,” Oram said on Friday before adding that the team is not winning and it was needed to get a lot of things out in the open.
There have been speculations that the players are not happy about the selectors’ “rotation policy,” that gives a chance to every member of the final 15-man World Cup squad to bat in the middle, and Oram conceded that this issue was brought up in the discussion.
However, he stressed on the fact that the players need to take responsibility and the team must accept the truth that they are not performing.
Oram also admitted that the team is disturbed by a string of dismal batting collapses in the series against Pakistan, saying that they all are feeling worse today.
“We’ve just got to slow it down, take a breath, and try to think clearly,” Oram added before saying that the team are on “panic stations” to win a match for their country.
